Javier & Danizza. Engagement session during wedding.

I met Danizza and Javier during my trip to Venezuela this past summer, where I photographed Jennifer and Tony's wedding.

They just got engaged and asked me to take a few shots of them together during reception, which I was happy to. And as it often happens to me, few shots turn into a major photo shoot, and I wish we had more time, but we had amazing wedding to enjoy (which we did by the way).

Last couple of months I spent putting my darkroom together. And thanks to few kind people I was able to get all essential items.

Being "digital born" photographer I was thrilled about this entirely new experience, and last night/morning I finally MADE my first black and white prints.

Jennifer & Tony. Destination Wedding - Caracas/Venezuela

This past summer I was presented an opportunity to travel to Venezuela to photograph my best friends' wedding. I was preparing myself for extraordinary experience and their wedding exceeded all my expectations.

I spent 1 week in Caracas. Most of it's time tagging along with the guys while they were pulling things together for the big day.

I don't usually put a lot of photos of dancing, but this time it's different. This wedding was about having fun, partying and DANCING, DANCING, DANCING!

There she is, Diana Patricia Cubilan, in white dress with orange flower. The story is that back in 1992 Los Del Rio were invited to a private party in Venezuela and that's where they saw local flamenco teacher Diana dancing. They were so impressed that one of the singers came up with the famous chorus right on the spot and named her "Ma'dalena".

Michelle and Jesse's wedding was very small and intimate. After the ceremony Michelle was so emotional that didn't really want to go out for any formal photos, but I'm glad I convinced her otherwise.

I did their engagement session earlier, in the past spring (see it HERE), so shooting the wedding felt easy for all of us, and for the most part of it they didn't even pay a lot of attention to me, and that's exactly how I like it. Congratulations, Guys!

I want to start this year by sharing one of my most favourite weddings of 2011.

What does dream wedding mean to me? Can't tell you yet... but I'll tell you where it begins for me.

I recently finished working on a wedding which was a pleasure to edit from very first, and most importantly, to very last image. This was my first wedding of the passed year, I only met the couple once before that, and what worried me is that I didn't have engagement session with them. Few days before the wedding I went to Saint John, where they were gonna get married, to find locations for our photo shoots, and come up with ideal walking route since there was plenty of time assigned for pictures during the wedding day. Anyway...I was pretty nervous. Everything changed after a phone conversation with the groom, Jesse, the day before the wedding, when I heard what every photographer wishes to hear, he said that they trust me.... and whatever I come up with will be fine with them.

So, great wedding for me begins with my clients' trust, which makes it very personal for me.

Their family made us feel like we were a part of it the moment we arrived to Katie's home, which I didn't think was possible since, you know,... we got paid to do the job. I'm probably getting too sentimental... I sometimes get too attached to a couple after months of postproduction.

But, now that it's over, I have something to look forward to - Katie's little sister's wedding this summer!

I had hard time selecting my favourite images for this post, and it's not even half. We had 3 hours assigned for formal portraits. Some of them took place in Irving Park and some in downtown Saint John.

Marathon Photo shoot

Few months back (eight, to be exact) I and Denis Duquette had a photo shoot involving over 50 creative young people from Moncton, which eventually became known as the Marathon shoot.

It was not easy to go through 5000+ images to select and edit only best ones, with this pretty busy wedding season that I had this year. But, the images are finally ready.

During last two weeks of making final touch ups to the images, I was often thinking what an awesome day that was. 27 models were photographed in over 18 hours. Everyone was busy doing their thing. There was so much creativity flowing in the air that you could cut it with a knife. Why can't we do it every day...

Anyway, this is it. Make sure you read Denis's Blog post about that day, he's a great writer and his post will give you much better idea about what was going on.

New Brunswick soprano - Wendy Nielsen.

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing New Brunswick soprano - Wendy Nielsen. Wendy needed a new portrait for her agent. She found me through Google and was inspired by one of the black and white portraits on my website.

I spent most part of my life in theatres too, so one thing we had in common was stage, and this made the shoot very easy and fun for me.

We did 2 looks: one formal, and another one more casual. Wendy was absolutely great to shoot. I think artists are easy to photograph because of their strong personalities.

The make up was done by Sarah-Jane Bastarache, and the Hair by Edgar Rojas.

In this video I retouch one of Wendy's portraits. As you will see I try to preserve skin's texture and only remove very minor flows. In order to keep facial features I didn't remove any wrinkles and only lighten them up.

This time I added subtitles to explain what I'm doing.

Black and white film continues to amaze me.

Here is a preview image from our recent beauty session.

On the technical side I kind of messed up there, cause I was shooting on digital camera as well, and my light meter was set to ISO 200 and when I switched to film camera, which was loaded with ISO 125 film, I forgot to change ISO settings in the light meter, which made my film underexposed by 2/3 of a stop. Denis Duquette suggested I should process it as ISO 200 film, which is what I did and was very surprised with the result.

I'm fairly new to Canada and only last year I learned what Movember was all about. And this year I decided I want to be a part of it and support Movember by doing what I love - taking photographs of people.

With this all being said, I'm doing a long day portrait session for men!

Wedding Portrait Retouching

I'm starting a new segment on my blog called "Postproduction" dedicated to technical part of creating an image - retouching and editing.

In upcoming videos I'm not explaining how I do this and that, and what tools I use etc., I simply want to share my creative process since I always was curious about how other photographers do it. And it's not a secret, it's all out there, you just need to know where to look.

But if you are interested to know more and have questions, then ask away, I'll try to answer them.

I'm very meticulous when it comes to retouching and it's one of the reasons why it takes soooo long before my clients get to see their photos.

Formal portraits of bride and groom get special treatment: first, every selected image is retouched and then color and other effects being added to create the look I want.

In this video my bride has beautiful skin, but side lighting from softbox revealed minor flows which had to be removed. I added a bit of cool tone to the shadows to give the image more of a evening feeling.

Mola produces very impressive quality of light like nothing else. As for Elinchrom - I can't wait to shoot with it in sunny day.

Environmental Portrait.

Person develops very strong connection with his surrounding and this can create very powerful portrait.

Wether I succeeded or not it's your call.

I like when my subject is looking away from the camera. And I know there's a lot of argument about this out there, but still I'm one of those who thinks that viewer of such portrait feels more secure and it allows him/her to come a little closer and look a little deepper. And who knows, maybe those extra seconds will be enough to trigger some thoughts or feelings and engage the viewer.

Shooting with one light. Nikon SB900 with Honl Greed

When I photograph people I always try to create natural looking light, so it's hard to tell it was actually lit with a flash.

For this post I was using single SB900 with 1/4 CTO filter and Honl greed for better control.

I was using built in flash and CLS to control the external flash.

CLS works great in certain conditions, like indoors or outdoor in overcast day. Not so much on a sunny day.

The biggest issue for me is making sure that the flash's sensor is pointed at me when the flash is fitted in Lastolite Ezybox, which is kind of why I've been looking at getting Pocket Wizards Flex TT5.

I often find myself using speed light setups at wedding receptions, and that's when TTL function is extremely useful. PW's radio triggering in full TTL is gonna make my life MUCH easier.

Farewell Party for Elya and Kosta. Moncton City Hall

After 10 years of living and working in Moncton, the Atlantic Ballet's dancers Elya and Kosta are leaving to start a new life in Ontario. Farewell party took place in City Hall yesterday, and I happened to be there with my camera.

Elya couldn't believe when Mayor Leblanc announced them Honourable Citizens of Moncton.

Nikon SB900. High Speed Sync (sample images).

The idea of this blog post is to show the ability of the Nikon SB900 to sync at high shutter speeds using Creative Lighting System (CLS) and show some sample photos.

All images were taken with Nikon D700 and 50mm f1.8 lens, and the speedlight was triggered using built in flash set to Commander mode ("e3" in Custom Setting Menu).

Camera settings were pretty much the same during entire shoot, cause I was shooting in Manual mode and only were changing shutter speed:
-Shutter speed 1/4000th-1/8000th sec f4 ISO 200
-SB900 was set to TTL +1.0 with 1/4 CTO filter (WB-Direct Sun);
-Built in flash was set to "Off" and used only for triggering.

SB900 (top right conner) was mounted using rubber band which came with Garry Fong sphere. I find myself using the band more often than the sphere itself.

One major con is that the flash refuses to fire when its sensor is exposed to the sun. So I had to keep sensor part of the body turned away from the sun and position myself so that the sensor could see the camera's built in flash.

Two reasons why I ever want to use High Speed Sync is being able to use larger apertures and not being limited to my camera's sync speed of 1/250th sec.

That was one fun shoot. We scheduled our consultation meeting with the couple, well, at least I thought it was just consultation meeting, and you should have seen the expression on my face when in the end of the meeting they asked me why aren't we going to shoot today!

Karen and Dave drove for 3 hours to see me, so saying that I need more time to prepare and come up with locations and concepts for their engagement shoot didn't seem like an option at the time. Of course me and Anya had to improvise and make it happen like now!

Weather was nice and sunny, we grabbed reflector and one SB900 and drove to good old Irish town park.

The guys wanted something very traditional for their photos, so no Paint Ball Shoot this time!

Yes, it's a lot of images. Enough material for at least 2 guest books.

I got very comfortable with Danielle and Marty and whole session took us about 5 HOURS. By the end of the day I felt like I shot a small wedding contained of only formal portraits. I was exhausted and very excited about the images I took.

It was my first photo shoot with out Anya assisting me. And since I use lighting equipment for 80% of my shots, this made the shoot even harder for me.

In the image above you can see actual sun beaming through the wall and in the image bellow I accidentally noticed that light hitting Danielle's face as she was passing by and I decided to do something about it. The light gives the image a retro kind of look and, as much as I love B&W, I thought it has to be in colour.

One thing I hear every time is this: "We are not models...", and it makes it even more interesting for me. But, in case of Danielle and Marty, it wasn't really big challenge. They executed every pose very naturally.

Anyway... They were a great fit to my style of photography.

Behind the scenes look of the image above, where Marty stepped up to assist me.
Set up is simple: two SB600s with 24" EazyBox, and SB900 with full CTO filter on it which creates this beautiful light that looks like it's coming from setting down sun. I love the effect and use it in my work a lot.

Since we got along so well, I went creative all the way, and tried things "OUTSIDE OF THE BOX"!!! :)

Katie & Jesse's wedding reminded me why I love shooting weddings so much, and you will know why, when you see the rest of the images when they are ready.

The wedding took place in Saint John and we were shooting from 8am till 10pm. 14 hours of work was worth every minute of it!

Album (also called "Guest book") is a perfect way to preserve memories of you engagement, and of course to show off photographs from your session right at your wedding

The album also can be designed with more empty space in case you wish your guests to sign it!

My photographs are about style, so are my albums.

You spend so much money on your wedding, so why not make your photographs last?!

I'm a strong believer that albums will outlast files burned on disk by many-many decades! That's why photographers call their rates - investment. Wedding is over - but photographs remain.

Marathon photoshoot. Prologue.

Somewhere in Downtown Moncton (NB, Canada!) two photographers, me (wedding and portrait photographer Sasha Onyshcheko) and portrait and fashion photographer Denis Duquette, meet:

Denis: "Hey, man!"
Me: "How is it going, buddy?"
Denis: "So, how about we get together and shoot some models sometime?"
Me: - "Sounds good, I'm in!"

We let few people know about what we want to do and over next month this casual session grew into massive marathon photoshoot with over 50 local people involved. It became a huge project with professional make up artists and hairstylists, professional and aspiring models, photographers and videographers for behind the scenes (BTS) coverage and all this crowd was hosted by Corkum Photographics studio.

The photoshoot was scheduled for April 10th. The plan was to photograph 30 models in one day. Due to some last minute cancelations we ended up with 27 models and it took us 18 hours to photograph them.

My fiance is posing during light check on setup night.

It was an artistic collaboration between everyone who was part of it. Without realizing it, we created a perfect opportunity for expanding our creative boundaries, for experiments and for trying things outside of our comfort zone. Needless to say, that such project attracted lot's of talents from our home town.

Everyone was working tirelessly from 6am until past the midnight with one reason - for the sake of their craft!

This post is just an introduction. You didn't really think that I would post pictures here, did you?! haha....

Atlantic Ballet. 10th Anniversary Velvet Gala.

The evening was dedicated to celebration of the Atlantic Ballet Theatre's 10th anniversary. This event took place on November 11th 2010 at Capitol Theatre with following reception at Delta Hotel.
Here are few images from the actual performance as well as candid shots during the reception.

I had the opportunity to exhibit selection of my photographs that I took over 4 years working with the ballet. They were all sold out on the auction that night. That was my first exhibition of such scale.
