Person develops very strong connection with his surrounding and this can create very powerful portrait.

I like when my subject is looking away from the camera. And I know there's a lot of argument about this out there, but still I'm one of those who thinks that viewer of such portrait feels more secure and it allows him/her to come a little closer and look a little deepper. And who knows, maybe those extra seconds will be enough to trigger some thoughts or feelings and engage the viewer.

I agree with environmental portraits without eye contact for exactly the reason that you say. I don't connect with the elements in the portrait when there is eye contact. Is this quintessential Canadian-ness, that even in viewing a portrait, I am afraid to be rude?
I'm actually ukrainian, but I wouldn't generalize it like that.
